The Quiet Man (1952) - ***1/2
An excellent John Ford Film set in Ireland. Sean Thorton (John Wayne) returns from America to his native town and is immediately taken by the feisty Irish lass, Mary Kate (Maureen O'Hara). I knew I was going to like this movie from the opening scene when Sean gets off the train and asks for directions. A nice blend of comedy, drama, and romance...and the beautiful Irish countryside. Of course there is a bit of conflict between Sean and her brother which prohibits her from following her heart due to strict courting rules. The town match-maker helps to fix things up though...at least temporarily. Unfortunately Sean doesn't want to fight the brother due to a bad experience he had in the boxing ring. But of course it turns out he is willing to fight for one thing, the respect of his wife. This is the enjoyable, wholesome kind of movie that they don't seem to make anymore today.
